In early May, officers from the Washington Humane Society's Humane Law Enforcement Department learned of two kittens that had been victims of extreme cruelty. When presented with the kittens, the officers found that neither could walk and all of their toes on each paw were infected.

The kittens were taken immediately to a local emergency animal hospital, where surgeons found that each of the kittens' claws had been ripped from their feet. In the process of a cruel and unnecessary home declawing procedure most of the bones in each foot were crushed, including each of the kittens' four legs. Doctors believe the breaks occurred when kittens struggled to escape.

Unfortunately, due to the severity of the injuries the kittens sustained, veterinarians determined that the bones could not be repaired and rehabilitation would not have been possible. Both kittens were humanely euthanized.

Now, this month of August 2012, justice is being served to a Washington DC resident who was arrested on two counts of felony animal cruelty. He is suspected of torturing these two 8-week old kittens in his home.

The Washington Humane Society finds this horrific act intolerable and will fight for justice to be served to the fullest extent of the law.

Our Intolerable Cruelty to Kittens Memorial is a way for you to aid the Washington Humane Society in our efforts to educate our community about animal welfare issues, to stop cruelty and to prevent future incidents such as this while remembering these precious kittens.

Thank you for caring!

When I read this story about the two innocent kittens, tears filled my eyes. It was unimaginable cruelty. I do pray that this person is punished to the fullest extent of the law. What saddens me the most is that they could have been placed in a good home rather than to be tortured unnecessarily. It's hard to believe that someone could be so evil.At least now they won't have to suffer any more And they are in the best place ever, with God.

Can anyone confirm/know if pictured here is one of the kittens? Thank you WHS for setting up this memorial for these two kittens. Having had two cats die in my arms due to disease at the vet, I'm solaced by the fact that these two kittens are no longer in pain. The unthinkable was done to them and their suffering is over. This story will haunt me for quite some time.

Domestic animals rely on humans for their care and there are far too many humans who seem to forget this.. Unlikely this thing will get what is coming to him, unfortunately animal cruelty doesn't seem to matter as much as other crimes. Why not make this an example? A person can be convicted and jailed for possessing a freakin' PLANT yet someone who hurts animals gets a slap on the wrist! Stop this madness!

Why don't we ever find out what happens in these cases? We only read what could happen to them, but very seldom the outcome. Were these people given time in prison and charged a hefty fine?

R.I.P. my little buddies.
I'm so angry I can't stop thinking about this...fairness is putting him in the basement with me and a blowtorch.
Please put pressure on the DC DA's office to try this s.o.b. for the maximum allowed.

This man is a monster to be able to do such a barbaric act to such innocent beautiful babies. If he didn't want them or care about them (as it is obvious that he didn't) he could of put them in a foster home for adoption. How would he feel if someone cut off all his fingers and toes!!!!!!! I hope he gets the Karma he deserves!!!!!!!!!!!

This is unbelievable. When I read this in the paper yesterday it brought me to tears. I'm a firm believer in Karma and I really hope this bastard gets what's coming to him for being such a sad excuse for a human being.

Unbelievable. Who in their right mind could even this to do this. I won't say what I really think should done to the person (assuming it's human) who did this.

These sweet little babies are in a fabulous place now! Too bad they had to endure so much pain and suffering while here on earth!

God Bless all these wonderful entities. I was horrified and saddened about this story. I guess he doesn't have to worry about his furniture now. If you care more about the furniture than the animals; maybe an animal isn't a good choice for you.

I echo Washington Humane Society's call that this monster be punished to the full extent of the law. These beautiful kittens could have brought life to a deserving household.
Remember that all of history's infamous serial killers started out as animal abusers.
5 years, thats 60 months in a federal penitentiary with a butch cellmate who misses his kitties at home. One day 2, he finds out what you are serving time for.
Then you will realise maybe 4 % of the pain you put those beautiful kittens through. We will see this till the end.

I hope some BIG guy in prison gets this HORRID CREEP (those poor, innocent kittens - my heart aches) ... !!! MAXIMUM sentence - no less, plus years of prison torture.

My cat, Nugs, and I are both saddened by this! Nugs was rescued from the Humane Society nearly four years ago and was declawed at the time of rescue. I know it is a painful procedure and done solely for human convenience. It saddens our hearts to know this happened and the intolerable amount of pain that these poor souls felt. We are glad we could help, even in such a small way.

Which is worse? The sickos who do such horrible things to innocent animals, or the law which does virtually nothing to punish them.

Just breaks your heart. I hope they throw the book at this person. I hesitate to even call him human, but animals don't even actl like this..it was beyond cruel. If he will do this to tiny kittens I can only imagine what he would do to small children.

Sick sick sick! Declawing is cruel, even under anesthesia.
Disgusted that this 'person' is still breathing air.
SICK SICK SICK!!!
At least the poor little babies are out of their misery, and are in a MUCH better place!!!

Such a sad story. I think they were victims of a culture that has a high level of indifference to both life and suffering, as evidenced by the high murder rate compared to the rest of American society. The man probably acquired the kittens as pets for his daughter. His acts were probably not to deliberately destroy them, he was simply indifferent to their suffering.

kittenlover, please stop. you need to understand that decision wasn't made in haste or with any kind of pleasure. given the age of the kittens, there's an extremely good chance they'd have been adopted, but they clearly weren't going to live lives resembling any sentiment of normalcy. as someone who recently had to do the humane thing--and did not take it at all lightly--for an injured rat in my yard, i'm offended by your comment.

This is such a horrible and terrible thing to happen to two innocent kittens! I hope that justice prevails and that this guys is punished to the full extent. If you are not going to care and love animals properly then you shouldn't have them. I wish those kittens could have had owners that would love and care for them. May they rest in peace in cat heaven.

It is so horrible and sad you guys choose to murder these innocent kittens. Its bad enough that an evil man tortured them, but who are you to choose if they live or die! You should be ashamed asking for donations for "euthanizing" aka murdering these innocent creatures.

As the owner of three cats, all rescues, this saddens me to know end. I have only on cat that is declawed and that was so I could keep her in my apartment at the time. I do not usually post but the pictures look like they could be any one of my cats. This man needs to be held accountable and given full punioshment under the law. People need to realize that animals have nerve endings that signal pain, also have feelings.
